Trinity College and the Book of Kells.

I didn't post many pictures of  Dublin because the city is very torn up with the building of a new tram line (hear that Boston?!)  There is construction everywhere.

The book now known as the Book of Kells is an illuminated copy of the four Gospels begun by monks on the Isle of Iona in the early 800's.  When Vikings invaded and killed most of the monks , a few escaped with this precious book and were given land in Ireland which became known as the town of Kells. The book was later given to Trinity College Dublin, where it is displayed.

When we visited in 1972 one page was turned each day.  Yesterday we discovered with the aid of computers there is a large exhibition showing the processes that were used to create the beautiful and elaborate decorations of each page  Some of the pages in the exhibition are blown up so the detail can be better seen.

The Old Library of Trinity College that houses the Book of Kells and it's exhibits is amazing.
