I waited to write this one until we were safely back in
Dublin and had turned in our car.
They say here:
US Drive on the right
British drive on the left
Irish drive in the middle!
We rented a car because there was no other service to the
parts of Ireland in the far North of Donegal County. Driving on left on the highway was only part of the challenge.
Once we
left the highway the roads got narrower and narrower and the blind curves got blinder
and blinder.
Typical blind curve
Forget about the meaning of yellow and white stripes on the road. White is in the middle of one way and 2 way traffic and yellow is on the side. I never did figure out exactly what the colors meant.
They also park facing either way so you can't be guided by the direction of the cars parked.
The Irish seem to have a system among themselves for passing
on one lane roads. Left turns are
particularly tricky and it seems there are no crossroads. EVERY one is a traffic circle going clockwise of course, amid which you
have to change lanes to exit.
It was a harrowing experience and I hope our car rentals
away from home are over. BUT I am so
grateful to Norbert to be willing to drive since I could not have visited the
parts of Ireland where family come from. There is no other transportation option.
